Last year, after an exhaustive investigation lead by Brad Gordon, we found substantial evidence that Mr. Sothea Arun had committed several serious criminal offenses including the abuse of children, extensive financial fraud, breach of trust, corruption, and coercion.
Once the major donor and founder of Sovann Komar realized the extent of these crimes, they took immediate action to protect the children and ensure their safety. The founder and donor to Sovann Komar has invested extensive resources to its response and to seek justice for the children who have suffered terribly under Mr. Sothea's leadership. The top priority of Sovann Komar has been to protect the children and families.
Sovann Komar has taken a range of appropriate legal steps to address the atrocious crimes committed by Mr. Sothea and to bring justice to the children who have been harmed. We have filed four criminal complaints (abuse, fraud and two rape complaints) in the Cambodian courts against Mr. Sothea Arun and his accomplices.
Abuse Case Update
We are thankful and proud of the witnesses who have bravely come forward with their testimonies. Even after receiving threats of violence and even death, they still come forward to testify against the abuser Mr. SOTHEA Arun and his accomplices.
We are sharing this because justice MUST be served and to make sure the public knows the truth. We hope this transparency will lead to a just outcome for the children.

Accused child rapist and fraudster Mr. SOTHEA Arun had his properties and bank accounts frozen by the Cambodian trial court in Phnom Penh on Monday, 22 June 2021. This action was taken after Mr. SOTHEA Arun was fired by his former employer, Sovann Komar LLC, in August 2019 following an internal investigation which found evidence of torture, sexual abuse, fraud, corruption, and embezzlement at the orphanage he managed for over 16 years.
Latest Update: Cambodia's Most Wanted Child Rapist Convicted of Fraud, Abuse of Power and Child Rapes
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has delivered a historic verdict for children’s rights and protection in the cases against former Sovann Komar Executive Director, Mr. SOTHEA Arun, and his accomplices Mr. HUN Chenda, Ms. THAY Sinoun, and Ms. UNG VEASNA Nimol. Mr. SOTHEA Arun has been convicted of rape of two children, fraud, intentional violence with aggravating circumstances related to the victims, and food deprivation, and negligence of care of minors under the age of 15. Mr. SOTHEA Arun was sentenced to 22 years in prison in total.
The convictions for the rape cases and abuse case were announced in court on 3 May 2023 and the conviction for the fraud case was announced in court on 22 March 2023. Written judgements were recently released by the court.
